Fire

Every apartment should have a FIRE instruction sheet which details what to do in the event of a fire at Montreaux. There is a magnetic Apartment number on this sheet.

If you discover a fire

  • Activate your nearest Fire Alarm switch (by the stairwells in the hallways ).
  • Telephone the Fire Service (Dial 111) giving details of address and fire location.
  • Evacuate the building as below.

You Hear the Fire Alarm (a continuous sounder)

Leave the building following the Fire Exit signage (down the stairwell and out through the ground foyer).

  • Do NOT run or return to collect personal belongings. Bring your magnetic Apartment number with you.
  • Do NOT use lifts.
  • DO check your immediate neighbours are leaving and assist anyone with mobility problems.
  • If you are in the garages, follow the Fire Exit signage to the stairwells and up to the ground foyer.
  • Report to the Talley Board (Ground Floor South Tower by post boxes) and put your magnetic Apartment tag on the board.
  • Assemble on the grass area on the corner of The Terrace and Everton Terrace.
  • Follow instructions of Montreaux Fire Wardens (usually BCC members, identified with a fire warden vest), and Emergency Service personnel.

Earthquake

During the Earthquake

Drop (to the ground where you are, do not try and move to another spot), cover (take cover under sturdy furniture or cover your head and neck with your arms) and hold onto something sturdy if possible.

Do NOT attempt to leave the building during an earthquake—you are more likely to be injured by falling or flying objects than to die in a collapsed building.

After the Earthquake

Stay where you are if it is safe to do so.  If you are in an area with high-rise buildings (as we are at Montreaux) stay inside.

Earthquakes aren’t like fires and as long as the building shows no obvious signs of distress, the safest place to be is inside and away from falling glass and debris.

If the fire alarm sounds after an earthquake, follow the fire evacuation procedures above. If the fire alarm sounds it must be treated as a fire event.

Make sure you have a plan of where to go to meet family and loved ones.

When you do eventually evacuate remember to take your wallet, mobile phone, coat, medications and emergency supplies.

Turn off as many appliances as practicable in case you are absent for some time. Remember to text rather than call relatives and friends, to leave phone lines available for Civil Defence and Emergency Services workers.
